March 2009 Newsletter

stuart Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech HaOlam Shechechiyanu Vekiamanu Vehekianu Lazman Hazeh. I start my newsletter with a prayer and not any prayer but my father’s favorite prayer. The translation is Blessed art Thou Our Lord, Our God, King of the Universe who has sustained me and permitted me to arrive at this moment of joy. Now that prayer has a lot of information in it, first it describes God as a king and second it says God is personal and has a direct influence upon my individual life.

After "all the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune" that I have endured, the loss of my medical career, ostracization from society, the inability to earn a living and support my children, and the shame our society imposes on those it punishes, do I still believe that prayer? The answer is no and also yes. Although I was born from two Jewish parents and identify myself as Jewish I have violated the de facto commandment of modern American Jewish life. "Thou shalt be successful." After the initial success of my youth: graduating medical school at 24 and finishing my pediatric residency at 27 I became a failure in the eyes of society. I have achieved the status of a fool. Specifically the fool in Isaac Bashevis Singer’s short story "Gimpel the Fool." When I read that book in sixth grade I had a unique response. I determined that only the fool could see Truth. Only the fool had the freedom to discover what is truly real unencumbered by the false pretensions and collusions of societal life. Well it took some doing but I have finally achieved that status and now this newsletter is here to impart what I have learned and paid for so dearly.

The answer is in the part of the prayer that I no longer believe, that God is male. I was always taught as a Jew that God is male. It is astounding to me now that Jews teach this because in our sacred text the Torah at the very beginning it does not say that. It clearly and specifically says that human beings are made in the image of God, male and female together. God is male and female integrated together. God is not male and God is not female, God is the integration of male and female. A male God is the projection of ego and power of male priests. When I went into treatment for my sexual addiction in 1991 I prayed to this male God and gave my life to him. What happened after was a "series of unfortunate events" that despite their tragic nature brought me to wisdom. Wisdom, known to the ancient Greeks as the Goddess Sophia, is female. In Hebrew the word is Schechinah, the Divine Feminine, the Divine Presence.

From my personal experience of the Divine I have discovered that the consciousness of God is female, the Schechinah. She is the source of all love and nurturance, all creativity, and of bliss and ecstasy. Human beings are not little playthings of great powers toying with us cruelly and mercilessly, rather we are the fulcrum of the Universe as we get to unify the Divine Masculine called Tiferet in Hebrew with the Divine Feminine, the Schechinah. That is the subject of my personal Jewish mysticism what I call Tantric Kabbalah. It integrates science, spirituality and sexuality. Come and see, come and see.
